Macon County Schools Participate in Statewide Severe Weather Drill

November 5, 2025

On Wednesday, November 5, the Macon County School System participated in Georgia’s Statewide Severe Weather Drill as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Day.

The annual drill, coordinated by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) in partnership with the National Weather Service, provides schools, businesses, and residents across the state an opportunity to practice their severe weather response plans.

A statewide tornado warning was issued to signal the start of the exercise. Students and staff across all Macon County schools quickly and calmly moved to their designated safe areas, following each school’s emergency procedures.

“The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority,” said Burt Parker, Director of School Safet for Macon County School System. “Participating in drills like this ensures that everyone knows what to do in the event of a real severe weather emergency.”

The drill serves as a reminder for families and communities to review emergency plans, identify safe shelter locations, and prepare or update readiness kits with essential supplies.

Macon County Schools thank all staff, students, and local emergency partners for their cooperation and commitment to safety during this important statewide exercise.
